Employment Data

Neighborhood Nexus' employment data comes from the Census Bureau's OnTheMap program, which reports small area data for both jobs and workers and provides basic demographic data such as age and broad income ranges. These are updated every year, but due to the nature of this type of employment data, there is a significant lag. Thus, the latest year of data is about 18 months old.

Another source of small-area employment data (with the same time lag issue) comes from the Atlanta Regional Commission. While these data are spatially more accurate, they do not include information about workers and their characteristics. Thus to keep an "apples-to-apples" comparisons between jobs and workers, we compiled and processed the raw OnTheMap data to provide small-area information about the region's employment.

These data answer the following questions:

  • How much do jobs pay in my community?
  • How much do workers earn in my community?
  • Is my community adding jobs?
  • Does my community have a high concentration of low-paid workers?
